Health, Safety and Environmental Policy
Table of Contents
Introduction and Objectives of the Policy
This Policy arises from the need to identify and mitigate the risks presented by both Altano´s own workers, customers and the company’s service providers (for distribution, marketing, supply, etc.), throughout their value chains, in relation to respect for the health, safety and environmental (“HSE”) principles and regulations. The purpose of this Policy is to provide an overview of the approach of Altano to manage HSE risks across the organisation and in all the assets that the company manages and develops. Furthermore, the way this will be implemented allows Altano to address its commitment to arising regulations such as European Union Taxonomy and the Corporate Sustainability Reporting Directive.
Commitments and Principles of Action
Within the framework of Altano’s general strategy, specific commitments and principles of action have been defined with a focus on HSE.
2.1 ENVIRONMENTAL PRINCIPLES AND COMMITMENTS
Altano is aware of the environmental impacts of its activities and therefore pays special attention to environmental protection and the efficient use of natural resources to meet renewable energy demand. Altano is committed to act beyond the legal requirements, establishing other environmental requirements adopted on a voluntary basis, which include the involvement of suppliers, working with stakeholders and promoting the responsible use of energy.
The main environmental commitments adopted by Altano are:
- Contribute to sustainable development through eco-efficiency, rational use of natural and energy resources, minimisation of environmental impact, promotion of innovation and use of the best available technologies and processes.
Contribute to climate change mitigation and adaptation through low-carbon and renewable energies, promotion of energy saving and efficiency and application of new technologies with this purpose without prejudice to not harm any of the other environmental objectives of the European Union Taxonomy.
Assure a sustainable use of the hydro resources when using water for the energy production.
Analyse the affection of the renewable energy plants installation on the area of installation and support the restoration and protection of biodiversity within the areas the power assets are located.
Elaborate monitoring reports of the assets in order to determine the way they affect the ecosystem and create a continues improvement in the reduction of the affection. This includes waste and water management, implementation and follow up of fauna and flora programs and integration of the assets in the landscape, among others.
Promote sustainable aspects that have significant relevance along the value chain of Altano’s services such as pollution prevention and transition to a circular economy.
Integrate environmental criteria in the processes of the renewable energy production in new projects, activities, products and services, as well as in the selection and evaluation of suppliers.
Minimise adverse effects on ecosystems and promote biodiversity conservation through out mitigation and compensatory measures during the installation, operation and decommission of the renewable energy assets.
Promote the efficient and responsible use of energy and natural resources, establishing activities aimed at improving their management within the framework of the circular economy.
Commitment to responsible waste management, focusing on reducing waste generation and implementing responsible waste management practices such as recycling and reuse.
Transparent monitoring and disclosure of environmental metrics such as carbon footprint, amount of waste generated and employees environmental training, among others.
Work in the continuous improvement of the practices, technologies, equipment and processes that have impact in the environment.
2.1 HEALTH AND SAFETY PRINCIPLES AND COMMITMENTS
Altano carries out its activities in all its facilities assuming that the health and safety of its staff is the most important concern. In line with this thinking, Altano has undertaken a series of mandatory commitments with legal requirements in addition to voluntary actions, in order to achieve a continuous improvement of working conditions and an increase in the safety, health and well-being of its workers. With this philosophy, Altano also involves its employees, customers, suppliers, contractors and other stakeholders in order to prevent and avoid accidents and occupational diseases at work.
The main health and safety (“H&S”) commitments adopted by Altano are listed below:
Manage Altano processes, operation and maintenance activities through its operating management system to continuously reduce risks.
Ensure that H&S is a non-delegable individual responsibility, which through a visible collective commitment is led by top management and assumed in a proactive and integrated way by the whole organisation, as well as by suppliers and collaborating companies when conducting its services for Altano.
Continuous training and education of all employees and contractors in occupational H&S, aiming to constantly improve the awareness and skills in the renewable energies sector.
Identification and ongoing assessment of the risks associated with its operations and implementation of effective mitigation measures to eliminate dangers and minimise risks.
Maintaining a robust and effective Emergency Response Plan that addresses a wide range of potential crisis situations such as dam breakage.
Use of equipment and technologies that meet the highest safety and maintenance standards in the energy production field. Regular inspections and preventive maintenance will be carried out to ensure safe operation.
Construction of a company-wide safety culture where all employees and contractors feel responsible for safety and are encouraged to report any incident or dangerous situation.
Commitment to provide working environments that minimise exposure to toxic and hazardous substances, as well as to provide health care and counselling programs.
Transparent monitoring and disclosure of H&S metrics such as training courses, accidents, air quality in working environments, audits of safety, equipment, etc.
Ensure that any potential hazardous situation that could affect workers, suppliers, customers, the public and the safety of the premises are reported, assessed and managed in an appropriate manner.
Commitment with the continuous improvement of the H&S system throughout control of processes, audits and inspections.
Monitoring and Review of the Policy
Altano’s management does ensure compliance with the Policy through the approval of specific plans such as waste management and recycling plan, prevention and safety occupation risks, environmental monitoring plan, biodiversity conservation plan, and education and awareness plan.
The Policy will be documented in an online format available for all the interested parties and kept for every planned review.
Altano does conduct an annual assessment of the activities and measures implemented by the companies in which it invests. This assessment consists of an evaluation of the effectiveness of activities to detect, prevent, mitigate, minimise, and eliminate the extent of adverse HSE impacts, as well as to communicate the HSE philosophy to all their employees and stakeholders. It is the responsibility of Altano management to establish a monitoring policy and to promote a culture of compliance.
In order to assure that the content of this Policy remains pertinent and appropriate for the organisation, Altano does develop a monitoring plan. This monitoring will compile the results obtained each year and the results achieved in the fields of environmental, health and safety in every asset. In this way, each asset will be evaluated individually, and measures can be applied to all Altano infrastructures. This monitoring may also detect potential risks before they occur.
The Board of Directors of Altano is responsible for the monitoring, updating and control of this Policy, which shall be reviewed at least annually by the Board of Directors.
The Policy will be adapted or modified in the following cases:
- When international, European, or national regulations are approved that may include changes with respect to HSE.
- At the proposal of Altano’s HSE Manager.
- At the proposal of any supervisory body or authority.
